As the federal government ramps up border patrol, agents in New York have been busy. Living in New York, we are on the front lines when it comes to controlling the border and potential criminals. While much of the focus has been on Mexican and South American immigrants, there are people from all over the world who try to come into the United States illegally, including through the northern border we share with Canada. However, in many of these cases, the people arrested are U.S. citizens, according to an email from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Port of Buffalo, Port of Champlain, and Port of Massena made multiple arrests recently, helping to secure our borders. 

In Buffalo, four people were arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle marijuana into the U.S. Officers found two different shipments that contained over four kilograms of marijuana. One shipment was labeled as “sea cucumbers,” and the other had cannabis packages sewn into a jacket.

On August 29, 2025, Maximus Padilla, a 25-year-old male United States citizen, was arrested at the Champlain Port of Entry. He had an active National Crime Information Center felony warrant for kidnapping out of the Clarkstown Police Department. He was processed and turned over to the New York State Police.

Back in Buffalo, on August 30, CBP officers arrested a 29-year-old U.S. citizen who was allegedly caught with multiple firearms, ammunition, and magazines. Luis Avellanet Rivera was charged with felony Criminal Possession of a Weapon and turned over to the New York State Police.

At the Massena Port of Entry, two people were arrested. A 31-year-old North American Indian female was allegedly found with a controlled substance. She was charged by the NYSP. A 57-year-old Canadian woman was arrested for a warrant in Florida for Dangerous Drugs. She was also turned over to the NYSP for extradition to Fort Lauderdale.

The Rainbow Bridge crossing was busy during the Labor Day weekend. On August 31, a 32-year-old male citizen of the U.S. was arrested for a warrant for Assault in Stroud, Pennsylvania. He was processed and turned over to the NYSP.

Finally, on September 1, at the Lewiston Bridge, CBP officers arrested a 46-year-old male U.S. Citizen on a NCIC warrant for Probation Violation – various traffic offenses, in North Carolina. A 47-year-old American man was arrested for a NCIC warrant for Obscene Material Possession in Orange County, Florida. Both were turned over to the NYSP for extradition.
