If you've clicked on this story with skepticism, I'm with you.  This sounds like some Fake News Tabloid Headline ... but it's unfortunately not.  I initially thought the same and had to see if some credible news sources were saying the same thing.  Well, when The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, CBS News, Fortune, NBC News, etc, are all reporting the same thing...it's not FAKE.

This sounds pretty serious.  Both videos above, News Reports, and the United States Department of Agriculture are urging the following:

  • DO NOT OPEN THE BAG OF SEEDS
  • DO NOT CONSUME THE SEEDS
  • DO NOT PLANT THE SEEDS
  • DO NOT THROW THE SEEDS AWAY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
  • REPORT RECEIVING THE SEEDS

The NYS Department of Agriculture, along with the United States Department of Agriculture, are urging New Yorkers to mail the sealed package of seeds in the original packaging, with your contact name and any other information you may have about the seeds, to the USDA at:

Office of the State Plant Health Director of New York c/o Christopher Zaloga,
United States Department of Agriculture
500 New Karner Rd.
Albany, NY 12205
I'm certain there will be people reading this who will attribute the seeds to some conspiracy theory and laugh, but why not proceed on the side of caution.  With all that's going on in this world right now, it seems that speculation beyond what we're being told is a bit irresponsible...just my opinion.

Here are some tips for self-care during the pandemic:
