New Yorkers could become victims of a scam by picking up the phone and engaging with scammers who are targeting them. Unfortunately, scamming is at an all-time high, and seniors could become victims. Investopedia warns that scammers ramp up their efforts when Medicare enrollment opens in the fall.

What Is Medicaid Vs. Medicare?

Sometimes, people get Medicaid and Medicare confused. While they both provide healthcare coverage to New Yorkers, there are some big differences. Medicare is for New Yorkers aged 65 and older, as well as some people who are younger and have certain disabilities. Medicaid offers coverage to a wider range of New Yorkers,

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that, together with the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), provides health coverage to over 77.9 million Americans, including children, pregnant women, parents, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. Medicaid is the single largest source of health coverage in the United States.

Scammers will likely ask you for your Social Security number, Medicare number, and other personal information. The number they call from may look like a legit government number. Many criminals can spoof official numbers to deceive their victims. Once they get a victim's information, they will start submitting false claims and potentially using it for other things.

Medicare employees will not call you unless you receive a letter about it first. If you have been a victim of a Medicare scam, call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
