New York residents are being warned to not answer calls from any of these area codes. It sucks that there is always someone trying to take our hard-earned money, but it's a reality of life. I am a fan of American Greed, which highlights some of the most prolific scams. Scammers come in all shapes and sizes and so do their scams.

GoBankingRates.com has compiled a list of "scam likely" area codes. Approximately 60 million Americans reported a phone scam in 2021, according to the website. Thankfully, most smartphones allow users to block calls from specific numbers and area codes.

GoBankingRates.com says that these area codes often are behind scam activities.

Scam phone numbers and area codes are phone numbers and area codes where scam activity is prevalent.

According to McAfee, scammers may use VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) to hide their own numbers and appear from other, possibly more familiar, numbers or area codes.

Call spoofing is when the caller deliberately sends false information to change the caller ID. Most spoofing is done using a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service or IP phone that uses VoIP to transmit calls over the internet. VoIP users can usually choose their preferred number or name to be displayed on the caller ID when they set up their account.
