List of Events To Remember 1 Year Anniversary May 14th Attack

As we approach the one-year anniversary of the act of domestic terrorism that ended the lives of 10 people in Buffalo and forever changed our region is quickly approaching, and residents of the Buffalo area are planning a series of events to mark the date.

The entire weekend that will surround May 14th is going to be filled with events designed to help promote learning, community, and remembrance of those that were lost.

As the first anniversary of the tragic May 14 mass shooting approaches, we remember the innocent lives taken on that unfathomable day. We are also reminded of the trauma that still exists in our community. As we focus on healing, ending racism must continue to be at the forefront of our discussions. That’s why we are working to unite our community to listen and learn, so we can enact change that honors the victims who lost their lives in the face of hatred.

What Events Are Happening Over The May 14th Remembrance Weekend?

The theme of the 5/14 Remembrance Weekend is Reflection, Healing & Hope, and officials hope it will truly honor those who were affected by the terrorist attack that was motivated by a white supremacist who was filled with racial hate.

Friday, May 12, 2023,

There will be an Educational Day of Healing and Restoration that will feature hearing circles, book readings, and uplifting messages from various special guests.
There will also be a panel discussion titled: Beyond Hate. The discussion will take place from 9 am to noon inside the first-floor conference room at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and will feature a conversation with New York Times Bestselling author, professor, and anti-racism activist Dr. Ibram X. Kendi and moderator Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry host of NPR’s The Takeaway.
- The panel discussion will feature The Most Reverend Michael Curry Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States and author of Love is the Way: Holding on to Hope in Troubling Times, Dr. Helene Gayle, President of Spelman College, John B. King Jr. Chancellor of the State University of New York, and Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown

Saturday, May 13, 2023,

There will be a Community Gathering for Reflection, Healing, and Hope that will take place at the Johnnie B Wiley Amateur Athletic Sports Pavilion on Jefferson Ave.

Sunday, May 14, 2023,

Sunday will be reserved to observe a Moment of Remembrance. Beginning at 2 pm at the Tops Friendly Markets on Jefferson Ave, the moment of remembrance will be led by Mayor Brown and there will be a ringing tolling of church bells at 2:28 pm.
After the Moment of Remembrance, there will be a Memorial Service for Healing and Hope. The service will begin at 6 pm at Elim Christian Fellowship, 70 Chalmers Ave in Buffalo, and will feature Pastor Jamal Harrison Bryant.
