If you purchased carrots from Wegmans, Target and other popular stores, you need to check your fridge! There's a massive recall of carrots that could cause harm in New York State, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Grimmway Farms is recalling its organic whole carrots and organic baby carrots due to potential health threat. While the carrots should no longer be on grocery store shelves, they may be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers. The products were shipped to retailers in New York, nationwide and Canada. The were sold in major grocery stores like Walmart, Target, Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe’s, and Wegmans.

Carrots Sold In New York May Be Contaiminated With E. coli

The carrots may be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) O121:H19. E. coli O121:H19. According to the New York State Department of Health,

"E. coli are a diverse group of bacteria that normally live in the intestines of humans and animals. Although most strains of these bacteria are harmless, some produce toxins that can make you sick and cause diarrhea (loose stool/poop) such as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). Anyone can get STEC infections. Young children and the elderly are more susceptible to develop serious infection, but healthy older children and adults can also become seriously ill. Symptoms of STEC infections can vary, but most often include severe diarrhea (loose stool/poop), stomach cramps, and vomiting."

Some people may suffer more severe side effects such as neurologic problems, chronic kidney disease, and hemolytic uremic syndrome.
