The last few days in New York have been quite exciting on the legal front. Not only are people in the Empire State dealing with a federal government shutdown that has taken thousands of New Yorkers out of work, now it seems that two of New York's most powerful people are at odds once again.

Less than two weeks after the Trump Administration filed charges against the former director of the FBI, James Comey, the United States Department of Justice has obtained an indictment for mortgage fraud against New York State Attorney General Letitia James. According to the Associated Press, James is accused of lying on a mortgage application to obtain a favorable interest rate and fees.

Many people around the nation, including members of the Justice Department, feel that these charges are politically motivated and that the evidence doesn't actually support any charges. President Trump and Attorney General James have been at odds since the President was found guilty of fraud against the People of New York and penalized with more than $355 million in fines in 2022.

These charges are baseless, and the president’s own public statements make clear that his only goal is political retribution at any cost. The president’s actions are a grave violation of our Constitutional order and have drawn sharp criticism from members of both parties.

The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Erik Siebert, resigned from office after telling the President that there wasn't any evidence to bring charges, even under pressure to file charges regardless.

The battle of the nation continues to show its New York roots. We're going to have to see what happens when this goes to court.
