The last few weeks in Buffalo and Western New York have been a wild one on the weather front. Between polar vortices with subzero windchills and below-freezing temperatures to blasts of lake-effect snow that have been battling the region for days, Buffalo has seen more than its fair share of winter weather.

However, the last day or so has been pretty unique as we've been getting blasted near hurricane-force winds coming in from the west. In addition to those winds causing all sorts of trouble on the ground, it's also causing issues on Lake Erie.

Thanks to wind gusts that have peaked out at over 50 miles per hour, the wind has caused damage to the Niagara River-Lake Erie Ice Boom, with a section of the ice boom even breaking.

The ice boom, which has been installed at the mouth of the Niagara River annually for the last 61 years, has snapped, and large chunks of lake ice are now flowing down the Niagara River. According to WKBW-TV, this isn't the first time the ice boom has broken. When this happens, ice chunks can cause damage to the shoreline along the Niagara River as they make their way north toward Niagara Falls.

Fort Erie Radio notes in an interview they had with officials from the Niagara River Control Centre that this is a significant breakage for the boom and could take some time to repair. Repairs, of course, are always dependent on the weather.

It seems that might be a bit because the winter weather machine in Buffalo, Western New York, and Southern Ontario may be working overtime for a while.
