If you were to go back in time about 20 years and compare the Buffalo waterfront to how it looks today, you would see some major differences and improvements all over the region. From the major developments that we've seen at Canalside to the total transformation of Freedom Park just north of the Peace Bridge. Buffalo's investment in its biggest resource is really paying dividends in the quality of our lives in the region.

One part of our waterfront, which does a lot more to keep the region stable than we may realize, has gotten beaten up pretty badly over the last few winters. Now, thanks to a huge investment from the United States Army, the Bird Island Pier is set to get millions of dollars in repairs and improvements, and it couldn't have come a minute sooner.

US Army Is Giving Buffalo's Waterfront Some Needed Attention

Stretching from the southern tip of Freedom Park and extending out from the Niagara River well into Lake Erie, the Bird Island Pier is a nearly two-mile-long walkway that has allowed people to get up close and personal with the Great Lakes since 1823. The pier connects Bird Island in Lake Erie with Unity Island in the Niagara River and has helped to direct boat traffic in the natural opening of the Buffalo Harbor.

Because of the pier's position in the water, it is prone to getting damaged by lake ice when Lake Erie freezes over in the winter. Parts of the pier and Buffalo waterfront are due to get a more than $15 million upgrade courtesy of the US Army Corps of Engineers.

the Bird Island Pier is a critical component of the Great Lakes Navigation System, supporting economic growth and strategic value to the nation, as well as great waterfront recreation... We’re proud to deliver this repair for residents and visitors from across the region, ensuring Buffalo’s waterfront continues serving the local community and the country.

More than 1.1 million tons of cargo flow through the Buffalo Harbor, and the pier helps protect the harbor from waves that blow in from the Great Lakes. Construction work is set to begin in the summer of 2026.
