The Buffalo Bills are finalizing a trade that is sending All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans in exchange for a package of picks that includes a 2025 2nd-round pick.

In a shocking move that seemingly materialized out of nowhere, the Bills are moving on from their star wide receiver. What was already a thin position group on the Buffalo roster is now shockingly bare, losing the best receiving option on the offense.

In trading Diggs, Buffalo finds themselves in a tricky financial spot. Diggs, as of now, carries a $31 million dead cap hit, putting Buffalo roughly $7 million over the cap. It remains to be seen if there are any corresponding moves associated with the trade to bring Buffalo back under the salary cap.

Diggs came to Buffalo in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings prior to the 2019 season. In four seasons in Buffalo, Diggs logged 445 receptions for 5,372 yards and 37 touchdowns, including leading the NFL in receptions and yards in 2020. Diggs posted at least 100 receptions, 1,183 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns in each of his four seasons in Buffalo.

This certainly changes things for a Buffalo offense that has Josh Allen in his prime just four weeks before the NFL Draft. The wide receiver room now consists of newly-signed veteran Curtis Samuel and late-season darling Khalil Shakir, neither of which are close to operating as a team’s WR1.

General Manager Brandon Beane will need to make quick work in addressing the wide receiver position either by trade or by draft picks come draft night.
