More Than a Mural: Bree Gilliam Paints Hope on Bailey Avenue
Every now and then, I get to cover a story that feels personal. The unveiling of Bree Gilliam's new mural at Evergreen Health and Community Access Services on Bailey Avenue was one of those moments.
I've known Bree for years. We grew up in the same church, and I've had the privilege of watching her grow into the artist she is today. I even have one of her self-portraits hanging in my office. Seeing her talent celebrated on such a large scale was a proud moment, not just for her, but for our community.
Bree shared during our interview that she was selected through a partnership between Evergreen Health and the Buffalo AKG Art Museum's Public Art Initiative, which highlights emerging artists while bringing meaningful public art to neighborhoods across Buffalo. It's the kind of opportunity every artist hopes for, and Bree was the perfect choice.
She also shared the story behind the mural, and that's what made it unforgettable.
The woman featured in the artwork is her mother. Bree created the piece as a tribute to her mom, whose years working in healthcare, including on Bailey Avenue, inspired the vision. It was her way of honoring the woman who spent her career caring for others while creating something that will inspire thousands who pass by every day.
Bree's journey is a reminder that talent is only part of the equation. She studied painting at Buffalo State University, where she refined her craft, but it was her passion, purpose, and commitment to telling stories that brought her to this moment.
This mural is more than public art. It's a love letter to family, healthcare workers, and the East Side. And for me, it's another reminder that some of Buffalo's greatest stories are being painted right before our eyes.
