In New York State, there are 44 state prisons, with 15 classified as maximum security. As of the September 2024 Monthly Report, the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) houses,

"33,589 incarcerated individuals and the supervision of 17,351 active releasees in New
York State. In total, there are 24,630 parolees currently under DOCCS’ responsibility, which includes parolees actively reporting in New York and out-of-state, those in the violation process, in absconding status, deported, or locally incarcerated."

There are significantly fewer federal prisons located in New York State. The Federal Bureau of Prisons manages only four prisons in New York.

"During the 1920s, Assistant Attorney General Mabel Walker Willebrandt was responsible for the federal prison system, including creating institutions for younger offenders (Federal Reformatory, Chillicothe) and for women (Federal Reformatory, Alderson). Recognizing the need for centralized administration and standardized regulations, Ms. Willebrandt also pushed for the establishment of a new DOJ agency to oversee the federal prison system."

MDC Brooklyn houses both male and female offenders. It has a population of 1,252 inmates.

2. Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) New York

NEW YORK, NY 10007

MCC New York housed male inmates. According to Wikipedia, "On August 26, 2021, the Federal Bureau of Prisons announced that the prison would be temporarily closed because of its deteriorating condition. At the time of the announcement, 233 prisoners were held there. They were moved to other prisons while the department dealt with the problems."

3. Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Otisville

FCI Otisville is a medium security federal correctional institution with an adjacent minimum security satellite camp and a detention center. It houses 902 male offenders - 808 at the FCI & FDC and 94 at the camp.

4. Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Ray Brook

FCI Ray Brook is a medium security federal correctional institution with a detention center. There are 864 male inmates housed at the facility.
