New York State is warning residents to be careful and prepare for extreme heat today, August 4, 2022. Extreme heat can quickly cause death in people and animals. Certain people are more at risk of dying or suffering injury from heat stroke.
Warning: Heat Index Values in the High 90s and Low 100s In New York
Yesterday, Governor Kathy Hochul warned New Yorkers of the threat of extreme heat around most of the state through Thursday. The high temperatures and humidity are causing heat index values to reach the 90s and 100s. The Centers for Disease Control warns that infants, children, the elderly, and people with chronic medical conditions have a higher risk of being injured due to the heat.
