There is a new recall that New Yorkers should be aware of. I'm quite shocked, as there really haven't been any major recalls in New York recently (according to the Food and Drug Administration). There have been multiple major recalls in a week this summer. In 2024, there were 296 total recalls, which is slightly down from 2023, according to Food Safety Net Services. There were 1,392 people that got sick from recalled food last year. The number of hospitalizations doubled in 2024 to 487, up from 230 in 2023, and deaths were 19 in 2024.

As the weather starts getting colder and the flu, COVID-19, and RSV pose a risk to some New Yorkers, they may be reaching into their freezer for frozen vegetables to add to their homemade soup. If you're one of those people, you need to check your freezer now. Endico Potatoes of Mount Vernon, New York, is recalling its frozen peas and carrots, and mixed vegetables, according to the FDA. The frozen products pose a serious health risk to New Yorkers, especially those with weakened immune systems. Endico brand frozen peas and carrots, and mixed vegetables are potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

"Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, a Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women."
