Sometimes, it seems like the inmates are running the asylum. The federal government has made questionable decision after questionable decision, especially when it comes to protecting the health of New Yorkers. And it couldn't come at a worse time. This time of year is when the triple threat - RSV, the flu, and COVID-19 - can put New Yorkers in grave danger. But here we are, at the point where someone who took heroin for spiritual awakening, suffered from a brain worm parasite, and who picked up a dead bear on the side of the road to eat, is running the federal health department.

For some reason, I thought we would have a smaller government under the current administration, not politicians with no medical background telling people what they can't do to protect their health, like getting COVID-19 vaccines. I'm not here to debate the efficacy of the vaccine or whether you believe it works or not. My point is that since when do we stop people who actually want to get the vaccine from having access, if that's what they want? Keep in mind that these are the same people who argued that people have a right not to wear masks, but now, suddenly, people don't have the right to get a vaccine?

The inmates are running the asylum!!

The one thing that allowed us to control the COVID-19 pandemic and reopen America is now under attack. At the direction of Robert F. Kennedy, a person with no medical degree, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration updated its COVID-19 vaccine guidance. On August 27, 2025, it released guidance "limiting the groups of people approved to get the updated shot to anyone age 65 and older and any person 6 months and older who has at least one underlying health condition that increases their risk of severe COVID-19 infection."

RFK tweeted that the vaccines are available to everyone who wants one after talking to their doctor. Keep in mind, many people don't have health care, so requiring a doctor to get the vaccine is putting a massive roadblock in the path of New Yorkers who want to get vaccinated.

Thankfully, people who want to get the COVID-19 vaccine can get it because our governor believes in science and listens to medical professionals. Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order that allows New Yorkers who want to receive the vaccine to do so. The EO will be in place for at least 30 days while the legislature works on a permanent solution. Gov. Hochul said,

“I promised New Yorkers that their family would be my fight. In the absence of federal leadership, we must do everything we can to ensure that New Yorkers have access to the vaccines and preventative healthcare they have come to rely on. By signing this executive order, we are sending a clear message that when Washington Republicans play politics with public health, New Yorkers can still get the care they need, close to home, from trusted providers in their own communities.”

If you don't want to get the vaccine, then don't! But people who want to get it should certainly be allowed to. Just like people can choose to eat junk food if they want, or smoke cigarettes. Personally, I'm not taking any medical advice from a former heroin addict, ever!!
