Buffalo Residents Need To Know Their Housing Rights
One thing I’ve learned living and working in Buffalo is this, too many people don’t fully understand their rights as tenants until something goes wrong.
Recently, local organizations have been using Fair Housing Month, which is April, to educate Buffalo residents about tenant protections, housing discrimination, and what landlords legally can and cannot do. According to Housing Opportunities Made Equal, both federal and New York State laws prohibit discrimination based on race, disability, family status, religion, sexual orientation, source of income, and several other categories.
And in today’s housing market, this information is critical.
Rent prices continue rising. Affordable housing feels harder to find. And many families across Buffalo are dealing with difficult housing situations without realizing they may actually have legal protections.
I think one of the biggest problems is that people often feel powerless when dealing with landlords or housing issues. But knowing your rights changes how you move.
That’s why I respect organizations like Buffalo Urban League that continue hosting educational workshops and community conversations around fair housing. These aren’t just “events.” They’re resources. So in the Town Run Down, here is one to attend!
