Buffalo Resident To Attend State of the Union in Washington DC
On Tuesday, February 7, 2023, President Joseph Biden will give his second State of the Union address in front of a joint session of Congress inside the United States Capitol in Washington DC. During that address, it's expected that President Biden will his view of the current condition of the country, along with laying out his agenda for the following year for the administration of the country going forward.
During the address, there are typically several notable guests that are invited to watch the address live inside the House of Representatives chamber. This year, one of the people who have been invited will be a Buffalo resident, Zeneta Everhart.
Ms. Everhart made national news in 2022 after she gave an impassioned speech to Congress in the aftermath of the Buffalo Mass Shooting that saw 10 people murdered and 3 additional people injured by a racist domestic terrorist in an act of violence that has forever left a mark on Buffalo.
One of the victims of that shooting, Zaire Goodman, is Ms. Everharts's son who luckily survived the shooting, but did sustain some serious injuries after being shot.
To the lawmakers who feel that we do not need stricter gun laws, let me paint a picture for you... My son Zaire has a hole in the right side of his neck, two on his back and another on his left leg caused by an exploding bullet from an AR-15. As I clean his wounds, I can feel pieces of that bullet in his back. Shrapnel will be left inside of his body for the rest of his life. Now, I want you to picture that exact scenario for one of your children.
-Zeneta Everhart
Ms. Everhart was invited to the State of the Union address by New York Senator Chuck Schumer, who described her as a light in our community.
Zeneta is great. When hope seemed lost, she lit a candle to guide us to the light. In short, she represents the resilience of all of Western New York.
