Parents, if you have a middle schooler who loves taking things apart, asking a million questions or creating something out of absolutely nothing, this one is for you!

Buffalo's very own The Foundry is giving young people an opportunity to put their creativity to work through Dream Builders, a hands-on STEAM program designed for students in grades five through eight.

And we're not talking about sitting in a classroom listening to someone explain how things work. We're talking about rolling up your sleeves, building something from scratch, making mistakes and figuring out how to make it better.

That's where the real learning happens! One thing I love about programs like Dream Builders is that they introduce our young people to opportunities they might not otherwise know exist. Through hands-on activities, students explore science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics while developing creative problem-solving skills.

The Foundry: Young Innovators Program

The Foundry has already watched young makers create everything from dog houses and nightlights to garden tools that have made their way back into the community. Imagine watching your child walk into a makerspace unsure of what they're capable of doing and leave standing proudly over something they built with their own two hands.

Now that's something worth celebrating! Let's talk about why programs like this matter. Not every child learns the same way. Some of our future engineers, entrepreneurs, designers and inventors are the very students who struggle to sit still in a traditional classroom.

Dream Builders gives those young minds room to explore, experiment and collaborate while learning that making a mistake doesn't mean they've failed. Sometimes it simply means they need to approach the problem differently.

Beyond building projects, they're building confidence, developing teamwork skills and discovering interests that could eventually turn into careers. As someone who believes in investing in our next generation, I love seeing organizations create spaces where our children can discover their gifts and develop the confidence to use them.

We have so much talent right here in Buffalo, and programs like Dream Builders remind us how important it is to provide opportunities for our young people to thrive.

Parents, if your fifth through eighth grader is curious, creative or simply looking for something new to explore, here's your chance to get them involved.

Our next generation of innovators is right here in our own backyard. Let's give them the tools, resources and encouragement they need to build their futures.
