If you need some resources to help you celebrate Black History Month, the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library has what you need. African Americans have contributed immensely to America, so we are giving ourselves our flowers! Buffalo holds a special place in Black history, being one of the last stops on the Underground Railroad. The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library has so many resources to help you and/or your children learn about Black history.

My mother was a librarian and teacher before she passed away. She loved books, but even more than that, she loved learning and knowledge. That's why it's so important to me to highlight the resources we have right here in downtown Buffalo. There are many books and multimedia available to you at our central library and other libraries around Erie County. Buffalo's rich Black history is something that all residents should learn about. You can find resources here.

In addition to the multitude of resources, there are upcoming Black History Month events you can participate in:

Two Wars: The Road to Integration
Tomorrow, Thursday, February 12, 2026, there is a screening of "Two Wars: The Road to Integration," an award-winning film created with the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park about the history of segregation and integration in the United States. It will be shown from 12 pm to 1 pm in the Ring of Knowledge at the Central Library, located at 1 Lafayette Square in Downtown Buffalo.

Buffalo History Channel Screening
There will be a screening of stories from the Buffalo History Channel by filmmaker Doug Ruffin. The screening will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2026, from 2 pm to 4 pm in the Ring of Knowledge at the Central Library, located at 1 Lafayette Square in Downtown Buffalo.

And A Shot Rang Out: A.J. Smitherman and the Buffalo Star
"This Black History Month, discover a story that connects Tulsa to Buffalo. Dr. Barbara Seals Nevergold and videographer Tala Harden present "And A Shot Rang Out: A.J. Smitherman and the Buffalo Star"—a powerful documentary exploring the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Join us for the film screening and discussion to understand how this tragedy shaped Black history. Saturday, February 21st, 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. at Central Library's Ring of Knowledge. Your Buffalo & Erie County Public Library – Profoundly Public."
