The Bills are 11-3 and clinched a playoff spot and the AFC East division with their victory over the Denver Broncos on Saturday.

However, one thing that Bills fans probably were not counting on happening in week 15 of the NFL season was the Cincinnati Bengals beating the Pittsburgh Steelers, which did happen on Monday Night Football.

That loss dropped the Steelers to 11-3 and since the Bills beat Pittsburgh, they have officially jumped them in the standings for the No. 2 seed in the AFC.

If the Bills can hold on to the number two seed, they would be assured a home playoff game until the AFC Championship...but did you know they could still win the AFC entirely? No, really...although a LOT would have to happen.

The Kansas City Chiefs are the number one seed at 13-1. Even if Kansas City loses their final two games and the Bills win their final two, the Chiefs would still be number one since they beat the Bills head-to-head.

Thanks to Buffalo Rumblings for these playoff scenarios.

However, if another team (Pittsburgh) also finishes 13-3 with the Bills and Chiefs, then head-to-head tiebreakers go out the window.

Conference record would be the next tiebreaker, but if this happens, then all three teams are 10-2, so it would have to move to the third tiebreaker, which is the best record against common opponents, but there has to be at least four between all three teams and there aren't...so then it moves to a FOURTH tiebreaker, which is strength of victory.

The Chiefs still hold the edge on that tiebreaker but the Bills could get the number one seed based on the strength of victory tiebreaker if a lot of other games fall their way in the final two weeks of the season, such as:

  • NFL South loses all their inter-divisional games (except of course Atlanta vs. Kansas City).
  • Tennessee wins their final two games (yes, rooting for the Titans...).
  • Baltimore loses its final two games.
  • Indianapolis loses at least one of their remaining games.
  • Arizona loses both of their remaining games.
  • Atlanta beats Tampa Bay.
  • Miami beats Las Vegas.
  • Houston loses to Cincinnati.
  • Cleveland loses to the NY Jets.
  • LA Chargers wins their final two games.

Wow. Yeah, the Bills have a shot but it's a very slim chance at the number one seed. Odds are, Bills are playing in the first round, hosting one of these teams at Bills Stadium in Orchard Park.

  • Baltimore Ravens
  • Miami Dolphins
  • Las Vegas Raiders
  • Indianapolis Colts
  • Cleveland Browns
  • Tennessee Titans
  • Pittsburgh Steelers (yes, Pittsburgh has not clinched the AFC North yet)

The Raiders need to win out and get help to make the playoffs. The Bills hosting Baltimore, Miami, Cleveland, or Indianapolis looks the most likely but it's far from decided.

Whew.
