Women, Golf & Finding Your Swing in Buffalo
There’s something about golf season in Buffalo that just feels different. The weather finally breaks, the grass starts looking greener, and suddenly everybody wants to be outside. For me, this season means one thing: it’s time to hit the links.
Next week, I’m back outside with my Summer Golf League, the “No Judgement League,” and honestly, I’m excited. What I love most about golf is that it teaches you patience, discipline, confidence, and focus all at the same time. And as a woman who truly enjoys the game, I really want to encourage more women to give golf a try.
For years, golf felt like one of those spaces where women, especially Black women, weren’t always encouraged to enter. But things are changing, and more women are picking up clubs, joining leagues, networking through golf, and simply learning for the joy of it.
Now let me say this clearly: you do NOT have to be good to start.
One of the best things you can do as a beginner is invest in lessons. Trust me, it makes a difference. Two people who have helped shape my golf journey are Jim Horne Golf Foundation and Ron Langhorne’s I’m Just A Golfer platform. Jim Horne has dedicated decades to teaching golf fundamentals and etiquette to youth throughout Western New York while increasing diversity within the sport. His foundation has impacted hundreds of young golfers and helped students earn college scholarships through the game.
Ron Langhorne has also become a major voice in Buffalo golf culture by mentoring youth and creating opportunities for communities that historically haven’t always seen themselves represented on the course. His mission centers around using golf as a tool for confidence, discipline, leadership, and connection.
If you’re brand new, don’t rush to jump onto a full course immediately. Start simple. Start at the range.
I highly recommend Airport Driving Range because driving ranges help you build confidence without pressure. You get to practice your swing, learn your clubs, improve consistency, and simply become comfortable hitting the ball. Nobody’s expecting perfection there — everybody is working on something.
And listen… Buffalo’s golf simulator scene is growing too, which is perfect for beginners and for our unpredictable weather. Spots like Buffalo Golf House, My Golf Dojo, and Paddock Chevrolet Golf Dome allow you to practice year-round, work on mechanics, and learn the game in a more relaxed environment.
Then once you’re ready to graduate to a course, Buffalo has some beautiful places to play. Delaware Park Golf Course gives you classic Buffalo golf vibes right in the city, while Diamond Hawk Golf Course offers a stunning championship-style experience for golfers looking to elevate their game. These are just two of my go-to places.
The truth is, golf is bigger than golf. It’s networking. It’s wellness. It’s a community. It’s learning how to focus through frustration. It’s understanding that one bad shot does not ruin your entire game, and honestly, that lesson applies to life too.
So to every woman thinking about trying golf this summer, DO IT! Buy the outfit. Buy the cute pink glove. Book the lesson. Go to the range. Laugh through the bad swings. Celebrate the good ones. And remember, every golfer started somewhere.
