Be Prepared To Pay More At The NYS Tolls By January 1st

The cashless tolls were implemented across the New York State Thruway about a week before Thanksgiving, and now motorists can expect to pay more at the tolls by January 1st, 2021.

According to WGRZ, The New York State Thruway Authority Board of Directors has approved a toll hike for the NYS Thruway, to help support the conversion to cashless tolls. It's effective January 1st, 2021. According to officials, current NYS E-ZPass customers will not see an impact.

“This is a modest toll adjustment balancing the needs for continued investment in our system while keeping tolls affordable for our motorists,” Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll said. “We have not had a toll adjustment in 10 years and as we enter into a new era of modern transportation on the Thruway, it’s the right time both operationally and financially for this adjustment to occur.”

According to WIVB, the standard E-ZPass toll rate will now become the base toll rate. Those who are using tolls by mail (no E-ZPass), will see a 30 percent rate differential on January 1st. There will also be a 15 percent rate differential for out-of-state E-ZPass customers.

There will also be a "$2 administrative surcharge per billing statement for Tolls by Mail statements to support the administrative costs associated with processing transactions through the Tolls by Mail program."

Tolls by mail for passenger vehicles using toll by mail will go from $5 to $6.83 by 2021. Commercial vehicles will go from $32.75 to $55.77.
