15 People Were Arrested In Niagara County This Week
Law enforcement in Niagara County was busy this week. Some people were on the naughty list and got handcuffs instead of a lump of coal. Even during the holiday season, a lot of people still don't take a break from crime. If anything, they may increase their criminal activities. According to FindLaw.com, crime increases during the holiday season. There are six types of crime that increase during the holiday season - drinking and driving, domestic violence, shoplifting, online crimes and scams, burglars, and porch pirates. Generally, Niagara County doesn't see a ton of homicide suspects, which is a good thing.

READ MORE: How Often Do Prisoners Escape From New York State Prisons?
Violent crime in New York state is actually relatively low overall. World Population Review says that the murder rate is 4.8. Compared to Mississippi, the state with the highest murder rate (23.7), New York is doing much better. But, even with that said, a murder rate of 4.8 is still a murder rate. It seems like New York State Governor, Kathy Hochul believes there will be a reduction in crime throughout New York. She hopes to close five prisons around the state in 2025,
The Governor's budget book states that the closings would boost efficiency,
Correctional Facility Efficiencies. The Executive Budget includes legislation to allow the State to act expeditiously to right-size and eliminate excess capacity by allowing for the closure of up to five correctional facilities with 90 days’ notice. This legislation will allow for an increase in the operational efficiency of the correctional system.
.
There were no specific prisons mentioned, so it it unclear if one of them might be in the Western New York area. Hopefully, as we move into the new year, local law enforcement and officials will find ways to reduce crime, not only by locking people up but also through job programs, youth activities, support for the homeless, and drug treatment centers.
