The people of Buffalo and Western New York are no strangers to cold and snow, especially this time of year. It's not unusual for us to see a fair amount of snow falling in the region. However, from time to time we get a blast of snow that shuts the region down.

That exact thing happened to Buffalo 40 years ago this week as we celebrate the anniversary of the Blizzard of 1985.

During that historic storm, Buffalo was hit with winds that topped out at more than 50 mph as nearly 3 feet of snow blanked Western New York. The snow shut down the region for days as officials tried to get the city dug out.

While Buffalo has had its fair share of blizzards in its more than 200-year history, this storm was significant for two special reasons:

  • This blizzard ended up stranding Eddie Murphy in Buffalo, who was visiting Rick James. During the time they were stuck in Western New York, Murphy recorded the greatest disco/funk song ever.
  • This blizzard also led to the greatest line ever spoken by a Buffalo politician.

Stay inside, grab a six-pack, and watch a good football game... Have a six-pack handy so you can enjoy yourself. Don’t take this too seriously.
-Jimmy Griffin, Mayor of Buffalo, New York in 1985

Thanks to that line from Griffin, this blizzard has gone down in history, known as the "6-Pack Blizzard."

That statement has remained in the Buffalo lexicon for decades and is one of the most recognizable statements to this day, 40 years later.

Do you remember the Blizzard of 1985? If yes, where were you when the snow was coming down?
