By just about all accounts and ways of measurement, the 2025-26 winter season has been a doozy for people all over the United States. From New Hampshire to North Carolina, the eastern half of the nation has been socked with all sorts of record cold and snow. Now, this isn't typically news in a state like New York that is well known for the snow we get in our cities and in our ability to deal with it.

However, since the new year started, the Empire State has been dealing with some serious cold and snow that would make the heartiest New Yorker cringe. With the frigid temps and large snowfall totals we've seen so far this year, workers from local, county, and state governments have been working extra diligently to keep our streets clear.

But, it seems that there are lots of folks in New York who are finding a way to get in the way, and it's causing a major issue for New York plow drivers.

There Have Been More Than 60 New York State Plow Crashes This Year

Being a road and/or street worker who is responsible for plowing or clearing snow is a pretty dangerous job. Not only are you handling tons of frozen precipitation, but you're often doing it on streets and roads where the people around you aren't paying enough attention to their surroundings.

Unfortunately, that is exactly what has happened way too often this winter season, as there have been several incidents where other vehicles have crashed into state plows.

As of 10 am on Wednesday, February 14, 2026, there have been 64 plow hits since the plows hit the roads this past fall.

I am always extra careful when driving near snowplows, because who wants to go head-to-head with a 10-ton truck with a sharp blade on the front and the side? But, given how many times I see people tailgate or zoom around them, I guess tons of people want to.

Let's hope we don't have any more plow hits this year and, please the some advice from the New York State Department of Transportation: Slow down, stay back, and don't crowd the plow.

How to Stay Safe During a Snow Squall

If you can, the best move is simple: don’t drive. Snow squalls are brief, and waiting them out is safer than trying to push through.
