While it seemed like it took forever for it to start, the winter weather season has hit New York State with a bang, bringing several big storms to the Empire State over the last few weeks. Those shows have resulted in at least two states of emergency being dealt with by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, and now, in response to that, school districts all over the region are shutting down classes for the day to make sure kids are safe and warm as the winter blows across Western New York.

Schools in Buffalo and all over Western New York are officially closing their doors on Thursday, November 12, 2024, and depending on weather conditions, those closures could get extended further.

While some folks may wonder why schools are closing, as conditions have worsened overnight and the local government has considered issuing travel bans, it seems to be potentially dangerous to have kids walking to school or waiting for school buses if it's not even safe enough for drivers to be on the road.

Given these factors many school districts are being more cautious than they have been in previous years. In addition to the Buffalo Public Schools, Hamburg, Eden Central, and more districts have announced they are closing. These closures will be officials' snow days and not remote learning days. So, students and district staff have a day off.
