Walmart may make major changes in stores around New York. While Walmart is known to have tons of security cameras, it's testing a new policy that will potentially add even more. Shoppers may be filmed even more in Walmart stores.

If you're worried about your personal privacy, even in public, you definitely want to have this potential change on your radar. Due to a rise in thefts, Walmart is testing a new theft prevention tool. According to CNBC, the big box store is running a pilot program where associates are wearing body cameras, similar to what law enforcement officers wear, I imagine. We are already filmed so much, that I'm not sure how much of a difference this will make to shoppers concerned about their privacy.

CNBC says that an associate at a store in Denton, Texas was wearing a body camera. A spokesperson for the company said,

“While we don’t talk about the specifics of our security measures, we are always looking at new and innovative technology used across the retail industry. This is a pilot we are testing in one market, and we will evaluate the results before making any longer-term decisions.”

According to Capital One Shopping, retail stores lost $121.6 billion due to thefts in 2023. That number certainly gives cause for concern, but it seems like honest shoppers ultimately pay for it through higher prices and more anti-theft inconveniences (like products being locked up).

If Walmart implements body cameras in stores throughout New York it could make many shoppers uncomfortable and ultimately they may choose to shop elsewhere. On the other hand, maybe it will help bring prices back down.
