Trump’s Tariffs May Cause New York Families To Lose Power
Families in New York could have their electricity affected by Trump's tariffs on Canada. The poop show has begun! Trump announced that he is imposing tariffs on our closest allies and neighbors, Canada and Mexico, drawing ire from both. Trump, who is a fan of tariffs, which ultimately are paid for by American consumers, put a 10% tariff on all imports from China and a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada.

In Canada, the Prime Minister of Ontario, Justin Trudeau has retaliated by placing 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. imports. Trudeau said that Trump's tariffs forced Canada into this position,
"We don't want to be here. We didn't ask for this, but we will not back down."
Ontario, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia announced that they will pull American liquor from shelves, a move that could affect American jobs. Ontario Premier Doug Ford ordered the Liquor Control Board of Ontario to remove American products beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, February 4, 2025. He said,
"Every year, LCBO sells nearly $1 billion worth of American wine, beer, spirits and seltzers. Not anymore. Starting Tuesday, we're removing American products from LCBO shelves."
The Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston has also directed the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation to do the same.
Canada is not taking Trump's tariffs lightly. In addition to alcohol and other products, Canada could increase tariffs or completely shut off its supply of electricity to America, affecting New York families. If Canada decides to punish New Yorkers for Trump's decision to place tariffs on their goods, heating could get expensive for many families in New York who still have a couple of months of winter left.

According to Heat Map, the U.S. imports thousands of gigawatt hours of electricity from Canada, especially in the Northeast. Ontario Premier Ford has floated the idea of stopping Canadian power exports to America due to Trump's tariffs. In New York, Hydro-Quebec provides 900 megawatts of electricity to New York State at a fixed rate through 2030. Canadian electricity exports power more than 6 million in America.
According to Canada Action, it's not just electricity that Canada provides to America, it also supplies approximately 9% of our natural gas demand, and "99% of natural gas imported into the U.S. comes from Canada." Aside from directly supplying electricity, Canada supplies approximately 25 percent of Uranium to the U.S. which fuels reactors that supply electricity to American homes.

In addition to hurting New York families by increasing costs or completely cutting off power, Trump's tariffs on Canada could cost American jobs. There are millions of energy jobs that could be negatively affected by a hostile relationship between us.
While I do understand that Trump's fans believe his tariffs will force America to become self-reliant, it is not something that is going to happen anytime soon. Infrastructure projects take years and lots of money to put in place. In the meantime, New York families may be forced to suffer.
