There is good news for New York families who have been struggling to make ends meet. Trump's retaliatory tariffs have been slapped down! The American economy has been in shambles since the new administration took over the White House, and part of that is due to Trump's tariffs. His trade war has been detrimental to U.S. consumers and businesses and seems to serve no real purpose other than to allow him to power trip on our allies and other countries taking part in the global economy.

Update: As of May 29, 2025, a federal appeals court paused the stay. At the same time, per MSN, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that the emergency economic powers law Trump invoked did not give him the right to “unilaterally impose, revoke, pause, reinstate, and adjust tariffs to reorder the global economy.”

But, thankfully, contrary to what many of his supporters think, we do not live under a dictatorship (they may want to give Russia or maybe North Korea a try if they want to experience life's hardships under a dictator's rule). While the U.S. Constitution seems to be a foreign document to them, it provides the guidelines for checks and balances that become especially important when a president considers himself a dictator who can force decisions unilaterally.

The unfortunate thing is that much damage has been done when it comes to our allies. Trump has wielded tariffs like a bully in elementary school, threatening to take lunch money from the other kids. There has been so much "winning" during the first 100 days that most of his attempts to destroy democracy have been thwarted by the courts. And now, they have struck down his tariffs, which is wonderful news for New Yorkers.

KEEP READING: A Judge Rules On New York’s Controversial Congestion Tolls

Today, Wednesday, May 28, 2025, the U.S. Court of International Trade has blocked all of Trump's tariffs. The three judges on the panel wrote,

"The question in the two cases before the court is whether the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 ('IEEPA') delegates these powers to the President in the form of authority to impose unlimited tariffs on goods from nearly every country in the world. The court does not read IEEPA to confer such unbounded authority and sets aside the challenged tariffs imposed thereunder."

I know his followers don't understand that the U.S. Constitution structured our government in a way that there are checks and balances with the three branches, but for the rest of us Americans who still believe in the foundation of our country, it is great to see it in play!
