Speeding in New York will cost you more soon. Governor Kathy Hochul is making good on her 2023 promise to make roads in New York safer. In her “Achieving the New York Dream” agenda, Gov. Hochul outlined the changes taking effect.

"Governor Hochul will direct the Department of Motor Vehicles to amend regulations to
increase the number of points associated with dangerous driving and decrease the threshold at which dangerous drivers are disqualified from holding a license. She will also direct the DMV to amend regulations to lower the bar for permanent license
forfeiture for reckless drivers who continue to drive under the influence of mind-altering substances."

New York DMV Changes Point System

One of the major changes, which may cause a lot of left lane drivers to rethink their speeding, is that anyone caught going even one mile per hour over the speed limit could get pulled over and penalized. If an officer decides to issue a ticket, the penalty will increase from three points to four points. And there's more!

- Driving While Using a mobile device – Increases from 5 to 6 points
- Failure to yield to a pedestrian – Increases from 3 to 5 points
- Reckless driving - Increases from 5 to 8 points
- Passing a stopped school bus – Increases from 5 to 8 points
- Not moving over for emergency vehicles – 3 points

In addition, it will only take 10 points within 24 months for a driver's license to be suspended.

According to the DMV, the changes have already taken effect, they just aren't enforceable until its system is upgraded, according to NewsChannel 9. Once the system has been upgraded and the DMV is ready to enforce the rules, notice will be published in the State Register.
