Automatic Speeding Tickets Will Be Issued On 16 New York Roads
As we move from winter into spring and then summer, New York State gets back to work on its roads.
If you get caught speeding on any of these 16 roads in New York State this week, you will get an automatic speeding ticket. There are work zones where drivers will be automatically fined for speeding between today and Friday, April 11, 2025. New York Vehicle & Traffic Law § 1180-E allows for automated speed monitoring in certain construction zones around the state. The program, which is a joint effort by the State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and the Thruway Authority (NYSTA), will last for five years.
The NYSDOT and the NYSTA may impose a fine on the registered owner of a vehicle speeding in a work zone on a controlled access highway.
Because speed detection is automated, the person who holds the vehicle's registration will receive the fine. Whether a family member or friend is driving your car, you will still be held financially responsible.

Many New Yorkers wonder where the money from the automatic speed program goes. According to NYS, the fines collected cover expenses related to the program. Once all expenditures related to the program are paid for, any excess revenue will be used to fund work zone safety initiatives. The good news, if any, is that it doesn't get sent to your insurance company.
