SNAP Banned From Buying Junk Food In New York?
There is a shift nationally in SNAP, will it affect New York next? For some reason, feeding people in need in America is controversial. There are some people who really, really, really don't want people in need to have food. It's wild to me. I've never been on SNAP, and my tax dollars help support it, but I'd never say hungry people, especially kids, shouldn't be fed.
I am definitely team "feed the needy" over team "help billionaires get tax breaks." But that's just me. I could never live with myself if I fought harder for the rich than those who struggle to survive. I understand and appreciate that SNAP is a lifeline for many New York families who are struggling. Contrary to the propaganda pushed by certain politicians, there are working poor in New York. These are people who work one, two, maybe even three jobs, but still cannot make ends meet. Many working poor people have children.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps 2.8 million New Yorkers, including 851,000 children, put food on the table. SNAP is our nation’s most powerful anti-hunger program. It improves food security, reduces poverty, and leads to better health outcomes, especially among children.
According to a report by the New York State Comptroller's Office in 2023, approximately one in ten New York households experienced food insecurity between 2019 and 2021.
SNAP recipients are facing a scary future now that there are certain politicians in charge. Cuts that will affect New York families and children are on the horizon.

I listen to facts and numbers, not the talking points that political parties use. SNAP helps feed families in New York, but it also allows rural farmers and other industries to make money. SNAP helps to boost local economies, according to research by the federal government.
"USDA research shows that investments in SNAP generate $1.54 in economic activity for every dollar spent by recipients, including at grocery stores, farmers markets, and small businesses. In New York alone, $7.4 billion in SNAP benefits annually generate $11.5 billion in economic activity across the State."
Per SILive.com, around 300,000 New Yorkers will lose some or all of their monthly benefits thanks to the Republicans' "Big Beautiful Bill." The average household is estimated to lose $220 in benefits each month. Those losses get passed on to farmers and other businesses in New York.

Personally, I think this could be a good thing for SNAP recipients in New York to be banned from buying junk food. Many other states are banning certain items for SNAP recipients. While I do believe in giving people a choice, I can completely understand wanting to regulate what type of food tax dollars are spent on. Being healthy is a major challenge in New York (and not just for SNAP recipients). Too many people are choosing unhealthy foods and beverages on a regular basis, leading to a health crisis.
Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Colorado, Florida, and West Virginia have decided that SNAP recipients cannot purchase soda. While the leader of the free world admits that he is addicted to Diet Coke, the research shows that soda is unhealthy for ALL. If putting this soda ban in place for SNAP recipients can stop some of our children from rotting their teeth, gaining weight, and suffering from other health issues, then I support it. In addition, four of those states - Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Florida - have banned candy as well. I support New York enacting a similar ban. Sugar can cause health issues, which then become very costly to treat. How do you feel about it?
