While there has been a lot of bad news for SNAP recipients, there is a bit of good news. New York families will see an increase in their SNAP benefits. Grocery prices are extremely high and continue to increase. According to the federal government, the USDA says,

"Food prices rose faster than overall inflation. The CPI for all food increased 0.4 percent from July 2025 to August 2025. Food prices in August 2025 were 3.2 percent higher than in August 2024."

That means New York families are paying more than last summer. Most people were complaining about food prices then; now they are even higher!

New Rules Threaten SNAP For Many In New York

My heart truly goes out to New Yorkers who are struggling to put food on the table. The economy is trash and people can't make ends meet. The federal government is making it harder for people who need SNAP to get it. New work requirements have been put in place. On September 1, 2025, the current administration added new rules and restrictions in order to reduce or completely eliminate benefits for many New Yorkers.

- Recipients who are adults up to the age of 54 must have 20 work, education, training, or volunteer hours per week
- New Yorkers who don't have a dependent child under 18
- Recipients must report that they are meeting the requirements

And there's more. Beginning November 1,

- Adults 18-64 will need to meet the work and reporting requirements
- Parents who don't have a child under the age of 14
- Veterans, homeless people, or foster youth aged 18-24 will no longer be exempt
