Recall 44,550 Pounds Of Shrimp Meat Affects New York

New Yorkers need to check their refrigerators or freezers. There is a shrimp recall that is affecting consumers in the state. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration announced a new recall of Bornstein Seafoods Cooked & Peeled Ready-To-Eat Coldwater Shrimp Meat. The company, located in Bellingham, Washington, is recalling 44,550 pounds of shrimp.

In 2024, there were 296 total recalls, which is slightly down from 2023, according to Food Safety Net Services. There were 1,392 people that got sick from recalled food last year. The number of hospitalizations doubled in 2024 to 487, up from 230 in 2023, and deaths were 19 in 2024.

Shrimp In New York Poses Danger

The shrimp at the center of the recall is potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. According to the FDA,

"Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is a type of disease-causing bacteria that can be found in many places, including soil, water, sewage, rotting vegetation, and animals. It can survive and grow even under refrigeration. L. monocytogenes can thrive in unsanitary food production conditions, leading to contamination of the food. When people eat food contaminated with L. monocytogenes, they may develop a disease called listeriosis."
