What is really happening with our food supply? There is a crazy recall in effect for radioactive shrimp sold at Walmart. Like, WTF, seriously. I always stay on top of recalls that affect New York State so that I can keep you in the know, but this might just be one of the wildest recalls I've seen. Meat always seems to be recalled frequently.

Another product is also potentially contaminated with Lm. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is issuing a public health alert for ham salad products sold in New York. The ham salad contains breadcrumbs that have been recalled by Newly Weds Foods, due to the potential of Listeria monocytogenes contamination. At the moment, there are two ham salad products involved in the recall:

- 12-ounce plastic tubs of “RESER’S FINE FOODS Ham Salad” with sell-by dates of 09/01/25
- 5-pound plastic tubs of “Molly’s Kitchen Ham Salad” with sell-by dates of 08/31/25

More products may be added to the recall. Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, which can pose a serious health threat to older adults, people with compromised immune systems, pregnant women, and their newborn babies. Consumers with questions can reach out to the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline. You can view all product labels here.

Per the Food and Drug Administration, it is actively investigating reports of Cesium-137 contamination in shipping containers. The frozen shrimp products, processed by BMS Foods of Indonesia, were shipped in these containers. They were found at four U.S. ports - Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah, and Miami. The FDA says,

"The product appears to have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby it may have become contaminated with Cs-137 and may pose a safety concern."

The shrimp products at the center of the recall are:

- Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005540-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
- Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005538-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
- Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005539-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027

While not sold at Walmart stores in New York, the products were sold at Walmart in Pennsylvania, as well as AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MO, MS, OH, OK, TX, and WV. Since many NY towns are located close to the PA border, shoppers may have purchased an affected product from a store in the state. The products should not be consumed or served. Please throw them away or return them to Walmart for a refund.
