Two major retailers have announced that they will likely be raising prices in New York. Families are continuing to struggle to make ends meet, and grocery prices are not coming down, even though they were supposed to on day one. According to USA Facts, the headline inflation rate in the U.S. was 2.3% in April 2025, while the CORE inflation rate is 2.8%.

Retail giants like Walmart and Target had a closed-door meeting with Trump recently to warn him about tariffs affecting supply and prices. Now, it looks like two major retailers are making good on their warnings.

The massive company operates 111 retail stores and employs over 39,600 people in New York State, per the Utica Observer-Dispatch.

On Thursday, May 15, 2025, Walmart announced that it is raising its 'everyday low prices' due to Trump's tariffs. This is terrible news for families in New York. Prices will increase this month and early this summer, according to The Hill.

Another major retailer also announced the same thing. Target has responded to Trump's tariffs, saying it may need to raise its prices. Target has already been feeling the repercussions of bowing down to anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion groups. There are certain people who don't believe that often-marginalized groups like women, disabled people, veterans, LGBTQ people, and others should have an equal opportunity to be employed and get promotions at their jobs. After Target announced it would rescind its DEI initiatives, it began to lose customers. Now, it is being hit with more barriers due to Trump's tariffs.

Even though lower prices were touted by the right during the election, Target's Chief Commercial Officer, Rick Gomez, said that the company may have to raise prices due to the new administration's trade war. During an earnings call, he said,

"We have many levers to use in mitigating the impact of tariffs, and price is the very last resort."

Hopefully, for those New York families who still support Target, they will do everything but raise prices, but I won't hold my breath.
