The USPS will not deliver certain packages to New Yorkers. The United States Postal Service has announced a major ban on deliveries to New Yorkers. The change is most likely due to Trump's tariffs and another executive order he signed recently.

Even though we have other options like FedEx and UPS, the United States Postal Service processes and delivers huge numbers of packages - 23.5 million daily. The USPS "processes and delivers 44 percent of the world’s mail." The largest USPS retail space is located in New York City at the James A. Farley Post Office (10001). It is 33,100 square feet.

The USPS has banned many things from being sent via mail, however this time, it has put a temporary ban on packages from China. Trump placed a 10 percent tariff on goods from China, which went into effect as of Tuesday, February 5, 2025.

There seems to be a lot of confusion over who pays tariffs. They are imposed by one government on imported goods from another country. The business importing the goods, NY 123 Company, for example, pays the import tax, which is then generally passed on to customers in the form of higher prices. China has retaliated and placed tariffs of 15 percent on U.S. coal and 10 percent on crude oil, farm equipment, and certain cars, according to MSN.

In addition to issuing tariffs on China, Trump signed an executive order that ended a “de minimis” exemption, which allowed anyone to send packages with a value of less than $800 to the U.S. without duties or inspections, according to CNN. This executive order likely plays a part in the USPS's announcement.

The USPS announced that as of yesterday, it placed a temporary ban on packages from China and Hong Kong,

"Effective Feb. 4, the Postal Service will temporarily suspend only international package acceptance of inbound parcels from China and Hong Kong Posts until further notice. Note the flow of letters and flats from China and Hong Kong will not be impacted."

Frequent shoppers of TEMU and Shein will likely be affected. New Yorkers expecting packages from China should be prepared for delays. If you need to place an order for a product from China, you may want to look for an American company or another alternative. No date has been provided as to when the temporary ban will be lifted.
