As if the longest federal government shutdown in American history wasn't bad enough on New Yorkers, it is getting worse. Federal employees have been furloughed or are working without pay, health insurance premiums are going up exponentially, people are going hungry without SNAP benefits, and now, airlines are canceling flights across New York. Are we great yet?

If you have travel plans in November, you should definitely book some backup options, like a rental car, train, bus, boat, or hell, even a bicycle will be more reliable at this point. Thanks to our federal government's inability to actually govern, the Federal Aviation Administration has ordered airlines to cut their flights by 10 percent at the top 40 airports. Flights are being canceled and delayed at airports across the state. There are groundstops and closures happening now through at least November 14, 2025. Are we great yet?

Per NBC News, airlines were directed by the FAA to ramp up cancellations to 10% by November 14. Due to the fact that our government has failed us miserably, more than 5,000 flights have been delayed and 1,100 canceled. This is just the beginning. With the Thanksgiving holiday coming up, things are going to get worse before they get better. Are we great yet?

Today, November 10, hundreds of flights have been canceled at the three major airports in the New York City area. As of 3 pm, per FlightAware:

LaGuardia: 508 delays / 144 cancellations
Newark Liberty Intl: 254 delays / 99 cancellations
John F Kennedy Intl: 274 delays / 92 cancellations
Buffalo Niagara Intl: 51 delays / 11 cancellations
Syracuse Hancock Intl: 25 delays / 16 cancellations
Frederick Douglass/Greater Rochester Intl: 32 delays / 10 cancellations
Albany Intl: 20 delays / 9 cancellations

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said, “You’re going to see air travel be reduced to a trickle. We have a number of people who want to get home for the holidays. They want to see their family … Listen, many of them are not going to be able to get on an airplane because there are not going to be that many flights that fly if this thing doesn’t open back up.”

Are we great yet?
