The scary incident happened around 4:18 pm on Thursday, April 18, 2024. The Tropper (whose gender wasn't revealed), pulled over a Blue Honda Odyssey for an expired Connecticut registration. The vehicle was traveling on the Southern State Parkway Westbound at Exit 18, Eagle Avenue, in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County. The Trooper approached the vehicle on the passenger's side. The driver, 33-year-old Calith M. Hudson of Jamaica, NY, became verbally combative with the Trooper. When the Trooper requested that Hudson present his driver's license Hudson threw it on the ground, climbed over the passenger's seat, and got out of the car.

Hudson ignored the Trooper's commands to remain in the vehicle. He then punched the Trooper with a closed fist, injuring the Trooper. A fight between Hudson and the Trooper followed. Good Samaritans who were driving by stopped to help the Trooper after witnessing the altercation. With the help of the motorists, the Trooper was able to take Hudson into custody.

The Trooper and the suspect were taken to area hospitals where they were treated and released. Hudson was taken to SP East Meadow and was charged with Assault in the 2nd degree (D Felony), Resisting Arrest (A Misdemeanor), and Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd (A Misdemeanor). New York State Police said,

"Every day in law enforcement, there is no such thing as 'a routine traffic stop'. In this instance what one may call a 'routine' traffic stop, led to a physical altercation and a trooper becoming injured. The New York State Police would like to thank the good Samaritans who stopped to assist in this incident. Highway safety is a partnership between law enforcement and the community at large. If not for the efforts of these good Samaritans, our trooper potentially could have been seriously injured."
