If you got a letter from the Internal Revenue Service, don't throw it away. Certain people in New York may be getting a second stimulus check from the IRS. More than 9 million people may qualify to receive stimulus payments and tax credits, according to an announcement the IRS made in mid-October.

Some New Yorkers could get checks for thousands of dollars. The Treasury’s Office of Tax Analysis identified people who qualify. Generally, these are people who did not file a tax return because their income was so low. Those New Yorkers who are eligible can potentially still claim money for the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit, and the Child Tax Credit.

According to the IRS, the deadline to file for the additional stimulus money is less than two weeks away on November 17, 2022. New Yorkers who believe they qualify can use free software that is available via the IRS website. The IRS Commissioner, Chuck Rettig, said,

The IRS wants to remind potentially eligible people, especially families, that they may qualify for these valuable tax credits. We encourage people who haven't filed a tax return yet for 2021 to review these options. Even if they aren't required to file a tax return, they may still qualify for several important credits. We don't want people to overlook these tax credits, and the letters will remind people of their potential eligibility and steps they can take.

Anyone who hasn't filed a 2021 tax return, but believes that they are eligible, can file the return on the Child Tax Credit website. The IRS said millions, including many New Yorkers, have not received their share of pandemic-era stimulus money.
