New York Targets Speeding Drivers With New Devices
Some drivers in New York State may be forced to install devices that limit the speed they can go in their cars. New York's highest speed limit anywhere in the state is 65 miles per hour. If you've ever driven in NY, you know that's a joke on interstates. People frequently speed and completely disregard the speed limit.
I will say, 65 mph is pretty low compared to other states. In many midwestern and western states, the speed limits go as high as 80 miles per hour. In a few pockets of Texas, the speed limit is 85 miles per hour. Conversely, there are pockets in some of the Great Lakes states that have speed limits of 55 miles per hour. Thankfully, most drivers in New York would not be subjected to the law. It specifically targets bad drivers.

Bad Drivers In New York Will Have Speed Limit Devices Installed
If two New York State lawmakers get their way, bad drivers will have to install a device on their vehicles to limit their speed. There was previously an effort to implement speed-limiting devices for all drivers. Senate Bill S1952, introduced in the 2023-2024 session, would have limited how fast vehicles could go. The bill would have mandated,
the use of advanced safety technology in vehicles in the state and requires the commissioner of motor vehicles to promulgate certain rules and regulations
The bill would have required that advanced safety technology be added to all passenger vehicles manufactured after 2024 in New York State.
Now, instead of all vehicles, there is a bill pushing for bad drivers to install the devices, which would prevent them from driving more than 5 mph over the speed limit. The bill targets drivers who have received at least six speeding or red-light camera tickets within a year or get 11 points on their licenses over two years.

Senate Bill S4045/Assembly Bill A2299 is sponsored by Andrew Gounardes, a Democrat representing the 26th Senate District. If passed, it would require,
"The installation of intelligent speed assistance devices if a driver accumulates eleven or more points on their driving record during a 24 month period, or receives 6 speed camera or red light camera tickets during a twelve month period."
The bill is currently in the Senate Transportation Committee.
