🔸The federal government announces a major shake-up to SNAP
🔸Almost 3 million New Yorkers rely on SNAP benefits
🔸The NY Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance said SNAP benefits for November were paid in full

It has been a rough month for SNAP recipients in New York, and it doesn't look like it is going to get much better. Due to the federal shutdown, the nearly 3 million New Yorkers who receive SNAP received their November benefits late. Only after Governor Kathy Hochul defied a federal order were benefits paid out.

On November 10, the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance said that full SNAP benefits were issued to eligible households and others would continue to receive them during the week. So, it appears they did not follow the USDA directive in an effort to make sure New York families can buy groceries, especially before the holidays.

It's still hard to believe that in the greatest nation on earth, we have a problem with feeding the neediest among us, but here we are. Recently, the federal government announced that all people who receive SNAP will need to reapply, according to POLITICO. They claim it will help eliminate fraud. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins told Newsmax that the administration's goal is to crack down on fraud, saying they will,

"have everyone reapply for their benefits, make sure that everyone that’s taking a taxpayer-funded benefit through…food stamps, that they literally are vulnerable and they can’t survive without it."

SNAP beneficiaries are already required to recertify their eligibility for benefits every six months. It's unclear how much money it will cost taxpayers to have the 42 million Americans and nearly 3 million New Yorkers reapply. The One Big Beautiful Bill introduced tougher work and other requirements.
