There's more bad news for New Yorkers who are struggling to make ends meet. As prices continue to go up, not down as promised during the November election season, it is becoming harder for New York families to survive. Billionaires are getting tax breaks, but none of it seems to be trickling down. Workers aren't getting raises, but companies are raising prices. Make it make sense.

The inflation rate has increased to 2.7 percent, as of July, even though the current administration promised to lower it. The jobs report was so bad that the party in control fired the person responsible for releasing the reports and said we no longer need jobs reports. Per CNN,

"President Donald Trump fired an official in charge of compiling basic statistics about the U.S. economy on Friday after revised data showed higher unemployment in May and June, falsely claiming the numbers were 'faked.'”

The current administration's tariffs are driving the prices of consumer and other goods up, costing New York families $2,400 in 2025. Per the Yale Budget Lab,

"The new tariff rates President Trump announced late Thursday are the highest in nearly a century and will cost the average family about $2,400 this year."

According to the Budget Lab, the average tariff is 18.3 percent, which is the highest since 1934. Keep in mind that the Great Depression was from 1929 to 1939. Families have already been struggling, now this.

New Yorkers are upset, rightfully so. Things are going from bad to worse, and the timing couldn't be worse. Beginning September 1, 2025, utility rates are going up. National Grid has announced price increases for electricity and gas. The average New York family could see an increase of more than $260 per year (although that amount could be exponentially greater).

As colder temperatures are quickly approaching, the price hikes could spell disaster for families during the winter season. The company said it will use some of the profits from its price increase to try to help families who need assistance.

“We know that everybody has increased costs and increased bills. Nobody wants to have another bill go up. Some of the things we're trying to do is put some additional money in that will support customers who are having problems paying their bills."
