Are we great yet? Asking for a friend. We were sold a bill of goods when it comes to grocery prices.  They were supposed to come down, but tomorrow they will increase. Times are already tough. Companies in New York and around the country are laying off employees or cutting hours. Many people face the risk of losing their healthcare or SNAP benefits. The federal government is waging a war on the poor, and now the middle class is facing hardships too. Nothing seems to be going well with the economy, even though election promises said everything would be great. The inflation rate increased by .3 percent to 2.7 percent in June. Millions of New Yorkers will face tough times in the future thanks to tax cuts for the wealthy.

"Tariffs on food imports will likely lead to higher food prices, making consumers worse off."

There doesn't seem to be any real effort by the federal government to lower the cost of living for working New Yorkers. There was a huge push to lower taxes for billionaires, but why are middle-class families facing hardship? We are the backbone of America, but no longer a priority. As a matter of fact, the politicians running Washington seem to be working to drive prices up. As Trump's tariffs are set to take effect tomorrow, Friday, August 1, 2025, grocery prices will increase. As prices continue to skyrocket, New York families will face difficulties feeding their families. Trump's tariffs apply to US goods imports from more than 80 countries.

The bipartisan Tax Foundation is warning working Americans that Trump’s tariff increases will likely drive up food prices. The report estimates that the tariffs will affect nearly 75 percent of all U.S. food imports. Prices for common goods like bananas, beer, coffee, fish, and spirits will increase.

The Tax Foundation spells out the impending disaster for New Yorkers,

"President Trump has often defended tariffs on the grounds that they will boost domestic production and create jobs. However, in the case of food imports, it is often difficult or impossible to onshore production due to land scarcity and a lack of suitable climates for certain goods. Consumers also often prefer the foreign alternative to American-grown products. This means tariffs on food imports will likely lead to higher food prices, making consumers worse off."

Hopefully, leadership in New York can find ways to counter the damage being done to New York families by the federal government.
