New York's Attorney General, Letitia James - the first African American and first woman to be elected to the position by the majority of New Yorkers, is among 22 AGs suing the new administration over an executive order to end birthright citizenship in the U.S., which is protected by the 14th Amendment. Attorney James had harsh words for Trump, who signed the executive order on Monday, January 20, 2025,
“The great promise of our nation is that everyone born here is a citizen of the United States, able to achieve the American dream. This fundamental right to birthright citizenship, rooted in the 14th Amendment and born from the ashes of slavery, is a cornerstone of our nation’s commitment to justice. Our constitution is not open to reinterpretation by executive order or presidential decree. President Trump’s attempt to undermine the fundamental right to birthright citizenship is not just unconstitutional, it is profoundly dangerous. Today, we are suing to uphold the integrity of the U.S. Constitution and ensure the promise of birthright citizenship remains intact for all who are born here.”

Trump has vowed to deport 'millions' of immigrants who are in the country legally and many immigration advocates fear the new administration won't stop with illegal immigrants. During a rally, Trump vowed to deport legal immigrants who were granted Temporary Protected Status, saying "Get ready to leave because you're going to be going out real fast. Get 'em the hell out!" The price tag for Trump's proposed mass deportations is approximately $315 billion.
