What looks like a very promising treatment option for COVID is on track to be available later in 2021.

We've got preventatives with the vaccines, and now science is continuing to attack COVID with a new treatment option that Pfizer is currently testing. According to a News 10 report, a new one does treatment in the form of a pill is being put through clinical trials and could be available later in the year. The new drug is similar to drugs used to treat HIV and the News 10 story says the drug works "...by inhibiting the protease (which)...prevents the virus from reproducing itself within the body."

Seeing a treatment like this come to fruition could really be the tool that makes COVID completely manageable in the long term. While the vaccines show a lot to promise, in those instances where someone does not get vaccinated or in cases where the vaccine may not be effective, this will be another safety net to make what can be dangerous virus treatable and survivable.

The Pfizer pill will join another viable treatment that was produced right here in the Capital Region by Regeneron in East Greenbush. Regen-cov also is being tested and has shown great promise in trials and could be available as soon as this summer. This treatment can reduce hospitalizations and death by 70 percent, and is the same treatment that was given to President Trump when he was fighting COVID.
