New York State's first woman Attorney General, Letitia James, joined with 10 other state attorney generals to release a memo addressing local authorities working with ICE officials,

“It is well-established—through longstanding Supreme Court precedent—that the U.S. Constitution prevents the federal government from commandeering states to enforce federal laws. While the federal government may use its own resources for federal immigration enforcement, the court ruled in Printz v. United States that the federal government cannot ‘impress into its service—and at no cost to itself—the police officers of the 50 States.'"

Nassau County Police Will Work With ICE Agents To Arrest Illegal Immigrants

Nassau County has decided to allow its local law enforcement to team up with ICE agents to crack down on illegal immigrants in Long Island. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who is a Trump supporter, says that 10 of the county's police detectives will receive the same authority that federal agents have to detain undocumented immigrants. If any illegal immigrant is charged with another crime, they can be detained in the county, according to the Associated Press.

Police in Nassau County will check the immigration status of anyone charged with crimes. ICE will then be notified if the person is not in America legally. The county will also allow its officers to work directly with ICE and provide jail cells for the detainment of illegal immigrants until they are handed over to federal authorities. Blakeman said,

“I want to stress that this program is about illegal migrants who have committed crimes. This isn’t about raids. This is targeted enforcement of our laws based here in the state of New York — people who have committed crimes here and have violated federal laws by being in the United States illegally.”
