More Than 2,000 Pounds Of Marijuana Smuggled Into Buffalo Disguised As Waffles
A Canadian man was arrested for trying to bring over 2,000 pounds of marijuana into Buffalo disguised as waffles. U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced that the 22-year-old man was arrested.
Ajaypal Dhillon of Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, was charged with possession with intent to distribute 100 kilograms or more of marijuana and importing marijuana into the United States. Dhillon is facing a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison, a maximum of 40 years, and a $5,000,000 fine. The incident took place on Thursday, July 27, 2023. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Peace Bridge encountered a semi-trailer operated by Dhillon at the primary inspection point.

The suspect gave CBP officers documents claiming that he was transporting a shipment of frozen waffles, which were supposedly headed to a grocery store warehouse in Georgia. The shipper listed on the documents confirmed that the shipment was not actually affiliated with it and was fraudulent. Dhillon was flagged for a secondary inspection.
When CBP officers physically inspected the cargo, they found 948 kilograms (approximately 2,000 pounds) of a leafy green plant believed to be marijuana. Officers also found 50 kilograms of ketamine. Dhillon had driven five prior fraudulent shipments in the United States. He was detained.
