The latest lake effect snowstorm that shut down parts of Western New York doesn't seem to be letting up in some parts of the region. The National Weather Service expects the lake-driven snow to continue to fall through the early hours on Friday, December 13, 2024, and drop several inches on the region that has already been blasted by wet and heavy snow.

The showbands, which had weakened some, are being refueled by both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario and should continue to intensify and shift more inland as the day goes on.

Because of these weather conditions, and the fact that some areas are seeing more relief from the weather than others, some area school districts have decided to reopen on Friday, December 13, 2024, while other districts have decided it's best to stay closed.

The Buffalo Public Schools, which had originally decided to reopen tomorrow, has changed its mind and has announced they are closing going to remain closed for the city's 30,000 students. This decision seems to make sense in Buffalo as the city's clogged roads remain a problem in the lower half of the city. While snow removal crews have been working non-stop to clear the streets, conditions in some parts of Buffalo aren't great, thus creating a potentially treacherous situation for kids if they need to venture out to walk to school or get to their bus stop.

Buffalo isn't the only regional district that has decided to stay closed, as different school systems in and around Buffalo have agreed to do the same thing. Those include Elmwood Village Charter Schools, Westminster Community Charter School, Orchard Park Schools, Lackawanna Central Schools, Iroquois Central School, and others.
