Another New York City Has Banned Airbnb and Other Short Term Rentals
The housing market in Western New York has been booming lately. Over the last couple of years, Buffalo has had one the hottest housing market in the nation and that has been paying dividends in all sorts of different areas.
While Buffalo having a top housing market is good for home sellers and investors, it's also been pretty good for landlords as they are able to charge more money for their rental units. This, of course, isn't necessarily a good thing for people looking for a place to rent. These price increases have been \making it quite difficult for renters looking for affordable housing as prices have been skyrocketing. These prices are causing serious issues for folks looking for affordable housing.
As values have increased, some landlords and property owners have decided that the regular rental market isn't for them and they've been looking towards the short term rental market. Renting a place on AirBnb and similar sites can be quite lucrative for a property owner. That is, if your city or town allows it. There is a growing list of municipalities that are banning property owners from listing their properties for rent on a short-term basis and now another Western New York city is joining this list.
Lackawanna Bans Short Term Rentals Like Airbnb
Towards the end of 2023 the city of Buffalo took action to ban short term rentals using platforms like AirBnb, preventing property owners from making their properties available. Now the city of Lackawanna is joining the growing list of cities and towns.
According to reporting from WIVB-TV, the city of Lackawanna Common Council voted 3-2 to ban short term rentals in the city.
Going forward, owners will no longer be able to offer their properties on platforms like AirBnb, VrBo, and others. Town officials say this is due to complaints they've received from residents, while owners complain that this is government overreach.
Only time will tell if other places in New York will join Buffalo, Lackawanna, and other cities.
